Vocabulum news — page 4

Vocabulum is a free app for learning Greek in your browser or Telegram. This page lists notable updates to the app, from new sections to new topics and exercises, with the date each one arrived.

September 2026

  1. An owl shows two depictions of one cup: isolated and in a scene.

Two vocabulary picture styles: icons and story scenes

Settings lets you choose between Classic icons and Living scenes for vocabulary pictures. Icons show an object or action on its own; scenes place it in a setting with surroundings and characters. Choose the style that helps you recall words.

Scenes are not available for every word yet. Where a scene is missing, the classic picture stays in place. Switching styles does not change your words or practice progress. The pictures are created using artificial intelligence.

  2. An owl connects Cypriot cultural objects into a chain of memory clues.

    Memory hints for Cyprus facts

Cyprus facts now come with memory hints: short associations that help a date, a name or a place stick. The hints are available in English and Russian.

  3. An owl assembles a wooden puzzle with Greek letters.

Perfect tense, mediopassive verbs and conditionals

The grammar trainer moved on to harder material. September brought the perfect tense, mediopassive verbs and conditional sentences with αν and the future.

As in every other topic, a wrong answer comes with an explanation of the right one.

  4. An owl presents three books for different learning levels.

Word collections for levels A1, A2 and B1

Words now carry a level, and the library has three new collections: Level A1, Level A2 and Level B1. Over the summer the dictionary grew noticeably, adding B1 words to the A2 vocabulary.

If you already know some of the words, mark them when you first open the app, and it will suggest a collection to start with.

August 2026

  1. An owl chooses a voice among five microphones.

    Five voices for audio

Voice choice arrived in the settings in April, followed by the first male voice in May. There are now five voices: Δέσποινα, Αοιδή, Καλλιρρόη, Νίκος and Ανδρέας.

Each of them reads the whole dictionary, and you can listen to a voice before choosing it.

  2. An owl sorts Greek letters into three groups.

    Present tense by verb type

In the present tense topic you can now pick a single conjugation type: Α, Β1, Β2, contracted verbs or Γ1 (-ομαι). This lets you drill one group of verbs before mixing them.

  3. An owl presents uppercase and lowercase Greek letters.

    The alphabet and reading rules

For complete beginners the app now teaches the alphabet: the letters, their names and sounds, and then the letter combinations that are read in special ways.

Exercises train you to recognize letter names, match lowercase and uppercase letters and hear a sound inside a word. Separate rules explain how a letter’s sound depends on the letters around it.

  4. An owl selects an exercise from three tokens.

Flashcards and a choice of exercise types

You can now switch off the exercise types you don’t want in the settings.

New formats arrived too: self-graded flashcards (recall the translation, reveal the answer and grade yourself), a quick “Remember / Don’t remember” check and “Gaps in a word,” where you fill in the missing letters.

July 2026

  1. An owl listens attentively to a recording through headphones.

    Listening practice

The listening section is open. Each lesson is a short Greek recording with questions about it, and you can replay the recording as often as you like.

After answering, you can open the transcript and its translation. Lessons are grouped into stages from easy to hard, and finishing a stage opens the next one.
