Vocabulum: frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about Vocabulum, a free Telegram app for learning Modern Greek: how to start, what it teaches, how reviews work, the exams, payments and your data.

About the app

Is Vocabulum still being updated?

Yes. We continue to develop the app: adding vocabulary, exercises and learning materials, and improving explanations, translations and the interface.

What is Vocabulum?

Vocabulum is a free Telegram app for learning Modern Greek. Its dictionary has 5,100+ entries with audio, translations and examples, with spaced repetition for vocabulary practice. It also offers grammar, listening, the alphabet, an A2 phrasebook and Cyprus culture exam preparation.

Is Vocabulum free?

Yes. All sections and exercises are free. If you like, you can support the project with a donation or buy a streak freeze with Telegram Stars; neither is needed for learning.

How do I start? Do I need Telegram?

Yes, Vocabulum works inside Telegram. Tap “Open in Telegram” on this site and the app opens in your Telegram; nothing else needs to be installed.

Which devices does it work on?

Wherever Telegram works: Android, iPhone, a computer and the web version. Your progress is tied to your Telegram account, so you can switch devices at any time.

Which languages are the interface and translations in?

The interface is in English and Russian, and every word and phrase in the dictionary has English and Russian translations. In the phrasebook situation cards the phrases are translated into Russian for now.

Do I need to know English or Russian?

Yes. You need to understand English or Russian to use the interface, translations and explanations.

Does Vocabulum show ads?

No. All learning sections are available without ads or paid plans. You can support development with an optional donation using Telegram Stars.

Is there a dark theme?

Yes. The app has a dark and a light theme, and the text size can be changed in the settings.

Learning with Vocabulum

Is it suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. Start with the Greek alphabet and the Base collection. On the first launch the app asks which words you already know and suggests collections to match.

Which levels does it cover?

Collections follow the CEFR levels A1, A2 and B1, and some words go beyond B1.

Is it Modern Greek?

Yes, standard Modern Greek, the language of Greece and Cyprus.

How does spaced repetition work?

The app updates your review schedule using your answers. Successful reviews increase the interval; mistakes shorten it. Read more on the Greek vocabulary page.

How much time do I need a day?

You choose the length of a session: 10, 20, 30 or 50 exercises. One short session a day is enough to keep your streak.

What if my connection drops?

Your answers are saved on the device and sent when the connection is back, so a drop in the middle of a session does not lose your work.

How were the words selected?

Words are grouped into A1, A2 and B1 collections for everyday communication and exam preparation. There are also topic collections, for example for travel or public services. The full dictionary includes more advanced vocabulary too.

Are the pictures AI-generated?

Yes. The pictures were generated with artificial intelligence, and the app labels them as such. The audio is synthesized speech in 5 voices.

Can I choose which exercises I get?

Yes. In the settings you can switch off any of the 11 exercise types, set the session length and pick one of 5 voices.

Can I add single words without a whole collection?

Yes. Search the dictionary by Greek spelling or by translation and add any word on its own; it goes to My words.

What if a word I need is missing?

Report it right in the app. Missing-word reports go to the developer’s list of words to add.

How do reminders work?

You can enable study reminders and the word of the day separately in the settings. You choose the reminder time. Both are off by default.

Can I study with friends?

Yes. Invite friends with a Telegram link or add them by username, compare results on the weekly friends leaderboard and share results in a chat or story.

Exams

Will it help me prepare for the Cyprus culture exam?

Vocabulum has a separate Cyprus exam preparation track with 680 practice questions on the topics of the official syllabus in English, Russian or Greek. Learning combines review with new facts by importance, with no daily study limit. Vocabulum is not connected with the exam organizers and cannot guarantee a result.

Can I prepare for the A2 Greek exam?

The phrasebook has 12 situations for the speaking and writing parts of the A2 exam, with examiner questions and complete examples.

Can I use it alongside a course or another app?

Yes. Review words between lessons, practice grammar topics from class or add listening practice to your routine.

Does the Cyprus track follow the official syllabus?

Yes. The facts cover the topics of the syllabus that the Ministry of Education publishes every year; the exam itself is described on the Cyprus exam page.

Payments and data

What data do you collect?

Your Telegram ID, name, username and language, your learning progress and settings, purchases in Stars and technical logs. The privacy policy lists everything, why it is needed and how long it is kept.

How do I delete my data?

Write to privacy@vocabulum.app and include your Telegram username or ID. There is no delete button in the app yet; the privacy policy explains the process.

What can I buy with Telegram Stars?

Two optional things: a donation to support the project and streak freezes that keep your streak when you miss a day. All learning features are free.
