Inside the app

What the exam is

People applying for Cypriot citizenship by naturalization, and third-country nationals applying for long-term residence, take a certification exam on the basic elements of the contemporary political and social reality of Cyprus. Its official name is “Examinations for Certification of Sufficient Knowledge of Basic Elements of the Contemporary Political and Social Reality of Cyprus”, and it is run by the Examinations Service of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth.

According to the ministry:

  • the Examinations Service announces exam dates and registration periods;
  • it lasts 45 minutes and consists of multiple-choice questions;
  • it is taken in Greek;
  • naturalization applicants need at least 60% of the total score, applicants for long-term residence at least 50%;
  • preparation topics are listed in the syllabus published by the Examinations Service.

The exam tests knowledge of Cyprus only: Greek language skills are certified by separate Greek language exams. Requirements, dates and fees can change, so check the official exam page of the Ministry of Education before you register.

Vocabulum is not connected with the ministry or with the exam organizers and cannot guarantee a result.

How the preparation works

Tap “Learning” to start a round of up to 10 multiple-choice questions. The app combines spaced repetition with new facts. These are Vocabulum practice questions based on exam topics.

A round of 10 usually includes 8 review questions and 2 new facts: 20% new. When fewer reviews are due, you get more new facts; your first round is entirely new. When few new facts remain, review fills their places.

New facts are introduced by importance for preparation: the essentials come first, followed by more detailed information. Learned questions return on a spaced repetition schedule. There are no chapters or daily study limit: finish a round and you can continue immediately. Extra practice remains available once you have seen every fact and no reviews are due yet.

Exam topics

The Examinations Service announcement of 22 September 2026 includes the preparation syllabus: basic information about contemporary life in Cyprus across these topics:

  • current affairs;
  • the modern history of Cyprus since 1960;
  • customs, events and traditional products;
  • geography, districts and cities;
  • the government, the political system and current office holders;
  • the economy;
  • entry requirements;
  • telecommunications;
  • weather and climate;
  • languages and religions;
  • currency and exchange;
  • working hours, celebrations and holidays;
  • health and safety;
  • transportation.

The app groups facts into five areas: history, geography, politics and institutions, culture, and religion and traditions. Learning selects questions across these areas according to your review schedule and the importance of new facts.

Questions in English, Russian and Greek

Questions use your interface language, English or Russian, by default. In Greek mode, questions and answer options are in Greek, with translations available at the tap of a button. Use this mode to practice reading before the exam, which is held in Greek.

GeoQuiz, search and exam readiness

  • GeoQuiz: a point appears on an outline map of Cyprus, and you choose the place name. It is a separate geography exercise.
  • Search finds any fact, including ones you have not encountered in Learning yet.
  • Topic mastery shows how many facts of each area you have already answered correctly.
  • Exam readiness is one figure built from how many facts you have learned, how accurately you answer and how much of it you do in Greek, with accuracy for each language.

How to prepare with Vocabulum

We continue to expand the Cyprus preparation track with checked facts and practice questions, and to refine explanations and translations.

Practice regularly and choose how many rounds suit you: Learning includes review automatically, and questions you got wrong return sooner. Switch on questions in Greek to get used to the exam’s wording. Before opening the translation, try reading the question and all answer options yourself. Use topic mastery to see which areas need work, and check dates and requirements on the ministry’s website before registering.

If the exam is close, you can do several rounds in a row: new facts are already ordered by importance for preparation. Search helps you look up a topic quickly, and GeoQuiz lets you practice recognizing places on the map.
